What I offer

Rev Susan Wheeler
I offer legal spiritual (Nature based) ceremonies for Same sex and Heterosexual couples in Pretoria, Centurion and Midrand. Ceremonies can be done at my office (small groups up to 10 people) or your wedding venue.
Wedding Ceremonies are sculpted around the needs of the couple and can include components that suit the couple's traditions and spirituality.
Full Pagan Handfastings, basic Civil ceremonies with spiritual components or a basic legal ceremony ("registration" only) can be done.

Wedding venue requirements
Your wedding ceremony can be held indoors or outdoors, but the legal part (signing of the register and related documents) has to be done indoors.
Another requirement is that the legal part must be done at either a private home, wedding venue chapel/church or where the marriage officer usually conducts his/her ceremonies and services.
Signing of the legal documents can be done either before or after the ceremony as long as everything is done on the same day.
Pre-wedding meeting
Ideally I would like to meet with you and your partner in order for us to get to know each other a bit, to discuss legalities, have a relationship discussion and plan the ceremony.
Should a meeting be difficult for you, planning etc can be done by phone or email as well, but this is rather impersonal and your ceremony may not at all work out the way you planned.
Rehearsals
Strictly speaking a rehearsal is not necessary. I lead you and other role players through the ceremony and each one will know exactly what to do and when.
Only for elaborate ceremonies with many people having roles, might it be needed to rehearse before the time.

What you have to bring with to the pre-wedding meeting:
1. A certified copy of your green bar-coded South African ID book.
2. 2 ID size photos for each (colour or black and white).
3. Documents as required by me (divorce decree, lawyer's letters etc.)
4. ID copy for each of your 2 witnesses.
On the day:
You will be issued with a civil union marriage certificate after signing of the register.
After the marriage has been conducted. all documents are submitted to Home Affairs and there is no need for you to worry about long queues to get your union registered.
Although it can never be guaranteed, it usually takes about a month for your Civil Union to be registered on the Home Affairs system, where after you can apply for your new ID book, should your surname change as a result of the marriage.

Ceremony components and explanation
Should you want a basic spiritual civil ceremony with no specific religious components, included here on this site is a basic outline to work from (see article on ceremony outline). Ceremonies can be done in Afrikaans or English or even both languages, depending on your preference.
A Pagan civil ceremony will include a handfasting (tying the knot) component and "jumping the broom", which symbolises a fresh start and a new beginning.
A full Pagan ceremony will be based on the civil ceremony, with a circle casting, quarter calls and invocations added.
Further additions to any of the above can be unity components such as "unity candle" lighting, sand or water ceremony (pouring sand or water from 2 containers into a third), crystal meditations (each guest must be provided with a crystal and take part in a group visualisation to send love through the crystal in their hands - usually a rose quartz - into the couple), sharing of a love cup, conjoining of a sword and chalice to symbolise the "Sacred Marriage" or anything else that you can think of that's practical and appropriate.
Each of the above components is accompanied by a short appropriate speech to inform everybody present as to the meaning of it and its significance in our spiritual lives and marriages.
